Ricky Nolasco

The Associated Press reports Florida Marlins SP Ricky Nolasco (13-9) struck out 16 hitters to beat the Atlanta Braves Wednesday, Sept. 30, including nine straight in one stretch. It was the most strikeouts by a major league pitcher in more than two years. Nolasco struck out 14 of the first 19 hitters, and set a team record with his 15th strikeout in the seventh inning. He gave up four hits and two runs (none earned) while walking two in 7 2/3 innings. Nolasco has won two of his last three decisions and four of his last six starts.

The Associated Press reports Toronto Blue Jays SP Roy Halladay (17-10) gave up four hits en route to his second straight shutout Wednesday, Sept. 30, against the Boston Red Sox. He has three shutouts, four complete games and a 1.47 ERA in his last six starts. Halladay has four shutouts and nine complete games this season, which are both major league highs. He walked two and struck out six in the game. Halladay improved to 6-9 in his career at Fenway Park.

Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer will have season-ending surgery after tearing muscles in his groin and lower abdomen.The 46-year-old left-hander was 12-10 with a 4.94 ERA in 30 games, including 25 starts. He lost his spot in the starting rotation to Pedro Martinez in August and probably wasn’t going to be on the team’s postseason roster.Moyer was injured on his final pitch in the seventh inning of the Phillies’ 7-4 win over Houston on Tuesday night.

News: New York Mets shortstop Jose Reyes has a new tear in the injured right hamstring that sidelined him for most of this season. Reyes has been on the disabled list since May with a hamstring tendon problem. Mets manager Jerry Manuel said before New York’s 7-4 loss at the Washington Nationals on Wednesday that doctors were trying to make a determination as to whether Reyes needs surgery. The Mets say Reyes felt discomfort in the hamstring while running during his rehabilitation work Tuesday at a training facility on Long Island. An MRI showed the new tear.
