The former Cy Young winner said that they opted for an injection rather than oral medication because it could better target the inflammation in his shoulder. Initially, Webb hoped to be ready for the start of the season. Then he targeted a late April return, which now is almost certainly out of reach. Webb had surgery on his shoulder in August and was back on the mound throwing bullpen sessions in January. However, he hit a plateau of sorts after the start of Spring Training and has not thrown off a mound since early March.

In news that nobody wanted to hear, Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch indicated on Thursday that “there’s an increasing chance that Brandon Webb will start the season on the disabled list,” according to the Associated Press. Webb “has not thrown a bullpen session for a week after saying he felt ’stagnant’ and was not making the progress he expected.”

Our View: Webb’s fantasy stock has steadily fallen to this spring, to the point where now he can only reasonably be called a late-round flier. He should not go undrafted, but you cannot be building a staff around him.

The Diamondbacks will reportedly try to work out a deal with Brandon Webb rather than pick up his $8.5MM option for 2010, according to Jon Heyman’s (Sports Illustrated) twitter page.

Our View: Webb is an elite pitcher, but the Diamondbacks are hesitant to pick up his option, as he underwent debridlement surgery on his shoulder in early August.

News: Arizona Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb is done for the season after having shoulder surgery. Webb’s right shoulder was cleaned up Monday by Texas Rangers physician Dr. Keith Meister. Arizona manager A.J. Hinch says he heard the surgery went well and Webb should be able to play catch in three to four months. The surgery complicates Arizona’s decision on exercising its club option on Webb for 2010. The deadline is shortly after the end of the World Series.

News: Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb has elected to have arthroscopic surgery for his right shoulder. “We support his decision to have surgery,” Diamondbacks executive vice president and general manager Josh Byrnes said. “Obviously, we exhausted every other course of treatment.” The surgery will take place Monday in Arlington Tex., by Dr. Keith Meister. Meister is the team physician for the Texas Rangers. Webb is not expected to return in 2009.
