Atlanta’s injured All-Star rookie outfielder Jason Heyward hopes to return to the Braves as soon as the second half opens on Thursday against the Brewers, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday. Heyward took batting practice with the NL All-Stars on Monday and Tuesday and thinks he’ll be able to return from the thumb injury. “It felt good,” Heyward said. “I just want to get back to feeling consistent and comfortable.” Heyward last batted in a game on June 25 as he’s been dealing with a bone bruise on his left thumb.

Cameron Maybin was diagnosed with bursitis in the area around his left biceps/shoulder, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com.

Our View: Dr. James Andrews gave a second opinion on Monday after doctors had diagnosed Maybin with inflammation last week. Andrews found no significant damage in the shoulder either, and Maybin should be back to baseball activities in about a week.

Our View: Pagan will be in right field and start over Jeff Francoeur, who figures to be hurt most by Beltran’s arrival. It sounds like Pagan should continue to play more often than not.

The Boston Globe reports that Jacoby Ellsbury (chest, back) spoke at length to reporters Saturday about the sequence of events that led to his decision to spend five weeks away from the Red Sox. He contradicted statements that have been made by team doctor Thomas Gill, including acknowledging that the injury is a result of the collision with Adrian Beltre on 11. Gill has maintained that the injury was a result of a diving catch made on May 22 in Philadelphia.
