Freddy Sanchez / Sanchez has batted just .227 (5-for-22) in six games since makes his season debut after shoulder surgery.

Sanchez has batted just .227 (5-for-22) in six games since makes his season debut after shoulder surgery. The 32-year-old has a .298 career average, so expect hits to soon come in bunches. If he does this while batting third in the Giants order, he could hold some decent value for a second baseman.

Sanchez, who was acquired by the Giants from the Padres on July 31, hadn’t played since Aug. 17, a stretch of seven games. Owners should be able to get the second baseman and his .297 batting average back soon. His retroactive period enables him to be activated from the DL on Sept. 2. Rohlinger has a .094 batting mark with two RBIs in 32 at-bats for the big club, although he has hit .281 with 16 homers and 78 RBIs for Fresno. Juan Uribe and Eugenio Velez should continue to share time at second base, although Velez has been awarded the last two starts.

The Giants were in desperate need of a second baseman after trying their luck with Emmanuel Burriss, Juan Uribe, Matt Downs and Eugenio Velez. In Sanchez, they got themselves a three-time All-Star who’s in the midst of another rock-solid campaign, hitting .296 with six homers, 34 RBIs, five stolen bases and 45 runs scored with the lowly Pirates. The only questionable aspect of the trade is health-related. Sanchez, who is mired in an 0-for-17 slump, missed his third straight game Wednesday because of a sore left knee. The injury clearly didn’t scare off the Giants, who parted ways with one of their top pitching prospects in Tim Alderson, who compiled a 6-1 record and a 3.47 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Connecticut this season. In 72 2/3 innings, he has issued just 14 walks against 46 strikeouts, and he figures to join the Pirates rotation sometime in 2010. The trade comes hours after Pittsburgh shipped its other middle infielder — Jack Wilson — to Seattle, which creates vacancies at second and shortstop that will likely be filled by Ramon Vazquez and the newly acquired Ronny Cedeno, respectively.
