It’s looking a lot like 2008 again, with Paul Pierce carrying the Boston Celtics to victory in the NBA finals and leading them to the brink of yet another title. Pierce scored 27 points — his best performance of this year’s finals — and the Celtics withstood 38 points from Kobe Bryant to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 92-86 on Sunday night and take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

In succession, we’ve seen the Celtics expose and demolish Dwyane Wade(notes), LeBron James(notes), and Dwight Howard(notes) in the first three rounds of the playoffs. Now it’s all about Kobe Bryant(notes). Do not forget this. The Celtics and Lakers tap off in Game 1 tonight, and it’s impossible to understate the Kobe factor. Bryant won’t admit it, but he is on a mission to solidify his legacy by winning a championship against the hated Celtics. He has won with Shaq and without Shaq. He has beaten the Indiana Pacers, the Philadelphia 76ers, the New Jersey Nets, and the Orlando Magic in the Finals. But he’s never beaten Boston. You can’t be the best player in the world if you lose two championship series to the Celtics. You can’t be the greatest Laker of all time if Magic can say he beat the Celtics twice in the Finals and you never beat them. Kobe has had one shot at beating Boston, and he remains haunted by 2008, when he shot only 40 percent in the six-game loss to the Green. He made only 7 of 22 shots in the humiliating clincher and walked off the court in silent fury after the 39-point drubbing. Now he is back and he is a man on a mission. Bryant scored 37 points when Los Angeles won the Western Conference finals at Phoenix in Game 6 Saturday night. In the fourth quarter, he made several shots while wearing a couple of defenders. ‘I don’t think there’s any doubt that this is one of the great playoff performances,’ said Zen Master Phil Jackson, who witnessed a few great individual playoff performances when he coached Michael Jordan. Bryant is playing with the eyes of Dexter."

The Los Angeles Lakers gave G Kobe Bryant the night off for the second game in a row to allow him to rest his legs and aching right index finger. Bryant was scratched against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night, one night after he did not play in a loss at Denver. The Lakers need only one victory or a Nuggets loss in the final five games to lock up the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. Bryant’s aching finger contributed to 13 of 47 shooting in his previous two games, so coach Phil Jackson has chosen to rest him to get ready for the playoffs. Jackson says he is not ready to say if Bryant will play against Portland on Sunday.

News: Kobe Bryant returned to lineup after missing five games with an ankle injury and hit a 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds left to lift the Los Angeles Lakers to 99-98 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies Tuesday night. Bryant led the Lakers with 32 points, including his team’s final nine points. His 3-pointer with 54 seconds left tied the game. Bryant last played Feb. 5 and Los Angeles went 4-1 without him. The Grizzlies took their first lead early in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Mayo for a 59-56 advantage and didn’t trail again until Bryant’s game-winning shot. Bryant, averaging 42.5 points against Memphis in two previous games this season, began his late nine-point run with a jumper from the left wing with 2:23 to go to trim the Memphis lead to 95-92. With Bryant scoring 17 of his points in the first half, the Lakers built several 14-point leads before settling for a 53-48 halftime advantage.

News: ESPN.com is reporting that Lakers guard Kobe Bryant will miss his fourth straight game — fifth if you include the All-Star game — on Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors. Bryant was able to fully participate in practice on Monday but his conditioning has appeared to worsen a day after the workout as he recovers from a high left ankle sprain. “[Bryant] hasn’t played in two weeks, so there’s a lot of things that he was trying out and trying to figure out [such as] passes that went awry and shots that he was reluctant to shoot, but he’ll come, he’ll come [around],” coach Phil Jackson said.

News: ESPN.com is reporting that Lakers guard Kobe Bryant will miss his fourth straight game — fifth if you include the All-Star game — on Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors. Bryant was able to fully participate in practice on Monday but his conditioning has appeared to worsen a day after the workout as he recovers from a high left ankle sprain. “[Bryant] hasn’t played in two weeks, so there’s a lot of things that he was trying out and trying to figure out [such as] passes that went awry and shots that he was reluctant to shoot, but he’ll come, he’ll come [around],” coach Phil Jackson said.
