News: Mets ace Johan Santana completed his last big test before pitching in a game, throwing two simulated innings Thursday. Facing hitters for the first time since having surgery on his left elbow late last season, Santana threw 40 pitches. Santana is scheduled to make his first start of the exhibition season Tuesday at home against Houston. “It felt really good because I had all the mechanics and everything working, so to have guys actually swinging a bat in a situation where I was throwing all my pitches like in a game, it was good,” Santana said. “I don’t feel anything in my arm, so that’s a good sign.” Santana said the surgery helped him find a better release point for his pitches, which will make him more effective on the mound. “Now I am able to extend my arm and release the ball in front of me and be able to throw my slider,” Santana said. “It’s a big difference from last year. I am able to now throw my pitches and let everything go. Last year I wasn’t able to do that. It will help all my pitches because now I am able to hide the ball better and extend to throw the ball better.”

Updating a previous report, Jair Jurrjens (shoulder) is expected to make his first spring training start the first or second week of March, according to David O’Brien on Twitter.

Our View: Jurrjens will require three or four more side sessions, starting on Monday, but ultimately this has to be considered good news. The Braves seem to have dodged a devastating bullet with the shoulder injury and it appears their rotation will be intact to start the regular season. Barring any setbacks of course.

News: Chris Tillman was scratched from his bullpen session Monday after leaving the field Sunday with back spasms. Tillman said he could have completed his workout Sunday but was removed as a precaution. He continues to receive treatment.

News: Stephen Strasburg is already creating quite a buzz in spring training. About 150 fans, twice the normal number for Washington’s first workout, watched Nationals pitchers and catchers practice Sunday. And most of them had their eyes squarely on the No. 1 pick in last June’s draft. Strasburg threw 37 pitches – matching his jersey number – during his 9-minute session, one of five pitchers manager Jim Riggleman watched intently. Strasburg tossed four-seam fastballs, two-seamers, a slider/curveball hybrid and changeups. After the outing, Riggleman tried to temper expectations swirling around the right-hander. “We’re open-minded. Everybody’s performances will determine where they end up,” Riggleman said. “(Strasburg) could pitch real well down here, but we still may feel like the development process is to be respected.” If Strasburg starts his first professional season in the minors, the 21-year-old from San Diego State said that’s fine. “They have a plan for me,” he said. “I trust that they’re going to handle me the right way. You just got to worry about what you can control – and that’s going out there and trying to help your team win a ballgame.”

News: Ozzie Guillen wasted little time Sunday in clearing up one question as the Chicago White Sox opened spring training for pitchers and catchers. Guillen said Mark Buehrle will start the season opener April 5 against Cleveland. Jake Peavy, the former Padres ace and Cy Young Award winner acquired in a trade last season, will follow Buehrle in the rotation. Guillen said the choice was made out of respect for Buehrle, who broke in with the White Sox in 2000. Buehrle’s opening day start will be his franchise-record eighth. He is currently tied with Billy Pierce with seven. Before Guillen told reporters of his choice, Peavy said he wanted Buehrle to get the nod and break the record.

Our View: No surprise here, as the lefty is one of Chicago’s longest tenured players and is known as one of the leaders in the club house. His stuff isn’t all that bad, either, as evidenced by last season’s perfect game.
